Special Education Philosophy

My journey in special education has been in my field placements throughout my time at Monmouth University. Over the years, my appreciation for this field has grown immensely, and I’ve found a deep passion for it. I believe special education is an essential part of our education system and is built on the belief that every student, no matter their abilities, deserves a chance at success. The incredible team of professionals behind each student makes the field so unique. Each of us must work together to ensure that students realize their potential, thrive socially, and grow as individuals. I believe that as an educator, you truly never stop learning. No matter if you are a first-year teacher or a twenty-year teacher, the learning never stops. To stay up to date with new research and best practices, I will continue my professional development to provide the best resources to my students.

Special education teachers work with kids facing all kinds of challenges, whether it’s a learning disability, autism spectrum disorder, physical disabilities, or emotional struggles. These teachers are absolute rock stars. Their job takes patience, creativity, and a solid understanding of how to meet each student’s unique needs. Before attending Monmouth University, I had little to no knowledge of special education, but after taking courses and spending time in the classroom, observing, and working with students, I realized just how rewarding this work really is. There’s nothing like building those connections with students and helping them hit their goals. It’s incredible.

As a special education teacher, I am an advocate for my students and their learning. With that, I will prepare myself and know the laws and policies, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), to ensure I give my students the proper tools and resources for this success. In addition, my job is always to put the student's needs first. This means I will always collaborate and build connections with parents to ensure the student comes first. I believe strongly in building relationships with families and establishing forms of communication.
